Ayur &#8211; which means life &#8211; and Veda &#8211; which means knowledge &#8211; it is one of the oldest medicines now also recognized by the WHO.<br \/>\nFor Ayurvedic medicine there is a harmonic balance between the body and the mind and the spirit; therefore the mental and emotional factors of the person are considered fundamental for the development of the disorder as well as for the cure (3).<br \/>\nBacopa it is also called Brahmi in India. The name Brahmi comes from the word &#8220;Brahma&#8221;, the &#8220;Supreme Creator&#8221; according to Hindu mythology. For this tradition, the brain has been the central organ for creativity and the intellect, hence Bacopa, which is used by Ayurvedic medicine to improve brain health, it is called Brahmi (4). Bacopa monnieri belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family, it is a marsh plant creeping. The plant have been used for centuries for the enhancement of memory (5).<br \/>\n<br \/><em>Bioactive principles<\/em> \u2013 The main bioactive components of Bacopa monnieri are Bacosides A and B. These saponins are believed to be responsible for the pharmacological effects attributable to this species (4). Bacopa present in Memorens\u00ae is titled 20% in Bacosides. <br \/><em>Therapeutic properties<\/em> \u2013 Bacopa extract improves memory and cognitive functions and can be useful in promoting relaxation and maintaining mental well-being (4,5).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mechanism of action<\/em> \u2013 Pre-clinical studies have shown an effect on the cholinergic system<br \/>\nthrough an inhibitory action of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), enzyme involved in the degradation of acetylcholine. Therefore, an increased availability of this important neurotransmitter is involved in the processes of memory. Bacopa also has protective effects as an antioxidant and as an adaptogen (increased resistance to stress) through normalization of plasma cortisol levels and some monoamines such as noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, in the hippocampus and in the cerebral cortex, that is, in the areas of the brain most vulnerable to stress (4,6,7). <\/p>\n<p><em>Tolerability<\/em> \u2013 Bacopa is well tolerated in children. Studies conducted did not showed significant side effects (8,9).\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eleutherococcus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Origin<\/em> \u2013 Eleutherococcus, also called Siberian ginseng, is obtained from the dried hypogea parts (roots and rhizomes) of Eleutherococcus senticosus Rupr. et Maxim (Fam. Araliacee). It is a thorny shrub that grows wild in the eastern regions of Russia, north-eastern China and Japan (3). <\/p>\n<p><em>Bioactive ingredients <\/em> \u2013 The main active components of Eleutherococcus are a group of compounds called eleutherosides (eleutherosides A-M), of which B and E are responsible for the pharmacological effect. It is thought in fact, that these two compounds are responsible for the adaptogenic properties of Eleutherococcus, (10). The Eleutherococcus present in Memorens\u00ae has a title of 0.8% in eleutherosides B + E. <\/p>\n<p><em>Therapeutic properties<\/em> \u2013 Eleutherococcus is used as a tonic to invigorate and fortifying the body in moments of fatigue and weakness and and when concentration and attention levels are lowered. It has adaptogenic properties, that is, increase the body&#8217;s resistance to external stimuli and stress and maintains the natural defenses of the body (11).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mechanism of action<\/em> \u2013 The adaptogenic effect is related to the regulation of homeostasis through different mechanisms of action associated with the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and the control of key biochemical mediators in the stress response (11). <\/p>\n<p><em>Tolerability<\/em> \u2013 Eleutherococcus is well tolerated. In general, they have been reported only minimal adverse events such as insomnia, irritability, tachycardia and headache, but at doses much higher than those used in clinical practice (12).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maritime Pine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Origin<\/em> \u2013 The French Maritime Pine is obtained from the cortex of Pinus pinaster Aiton, subsp. atlantica des Villar, Fam. Pinaceae, a species of pine that grows along the Bay of Biscay in northern France. The cortex is thick, of a brownish-red color, with deep cracks obtained from monocultures that grow over a period of 30-50 years (3).<\/p>\n<p><em>Bioactive principles<\/em> \u2013 The Maritime Pine extract contains polyphenolic compounds consisting mainly of procyanidins (catechin, taxifolin and oligomers with 7 or more flavonoid units) which exert a significant antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging against reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (13). Memorens\u00ae contains a dry extract of Pinus pinaster titled at 95% in OPC (proanthocyanidolic oligomers).<\/p>\n<p><em>Therapeutic properties<\/em> \u2013 Maritime Pine extract exerts protective effects against oxidative stress, both by increasing the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes and acting as a free radical scavenger. <\/p>\n<p><em>Mechanism of action<\/em> \u2013 The Maritime Pine extract carries out its antioxidant activity by increasing the synthesis of enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase which degrade the products from oxidative stress. The Maritime Pine also has anti-inflammatory activity preventing the release of pro-inflammatory mediators regulated by the oxidative stress such as the inducible NO synthetase enzyme, which it produces a high amount of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory activity, NF-k\u03b2 (nuclear factor k\u03b2), an intracellular factor that is activated by several inflammatory mediators such as TNF-\u03b1, IL-1 \u03b1, IL-1\u03b2, IL-8, and IL-6. It has also been shown that in children with ADHD, the Maritime Pine reduces hyperactivity, excretion of catecholamines and oxidative stress (13). <\/p>\n<p><em>Tolerability<\/em> \u2013 Maritime Pine is well tolerated. Out of a total of 2000 patients, only 1.5% reported mild side effects such as intestinal disorders, dizziness, headache (3).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal jelly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Royal jelly is a precious food that is produced by bees. It&#8217;s a lot rich in vitamins, rapidly assimilable sugars, unsaturated fats useful for health, completely natural amino acids and proteins, vitamins and minerals which make it an excellent tonic to counteract fatigue, asthenia and loss of appetite in children. Has hepatoprotective properties, antioxidants and promotes the elimination of intestinal gas (15).<\/p>\n<p><em>Mechanism of action<\/em> \u2013 At present, the mechanism of action of the Artichoke and its main compounds cannot be considered clarified (15).<\/p>\n<p><em>Tolerability<\/em> \u2013 Preparations containing Artichoke are generally well tolerated. No major adverse events were reported from clinical pharmacology studies on humans with preparations containing Artichoke leaf extracts.
