Origin
It belongs to the Labiatae family and is a spontaneous herbaceous plant that grows in the Mediterranean area.
Its name comes from the Greek and means “that smells like honey”.
Bioactive principles
It is composed of essential oil, polyphenolic acids, many flavonoids, tannins and polysaccharides. The leaves are utilized and must contain not less than the 4% of total hydroxycinnamic derivatives, expressed as rosmarinic acid calculated on the dry drug.
The lemon balm present in Xerenens® oral spray has a titration of 5% rosmarinic acid.
Therapeutic properties
Lemon balm extract promotes mental relaxation and mental well-being and normalises the mood. Promotes regular gastrointestinal motility and gas elimination.
Mechanism of action
The GABAergic activity determines its neurosedative and spasmolytic effect.
Tolerability
Lemon balm is well tolerated. Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation due to lack of clinical data.
