Origin
Its name comes from Latin and means “healthy“. This plant belongs to the Valerianaceae family and grows in Europe, North America and South America. The parts used are the roots and rhizome which are carefully dried at a temperature below 40°C.
Bioactive principles
Valerian contains essential oils whose main components are sesquiterpene acids: valerenic acid, valeranone and valerenale.
Xerenens® oral spray has a titration of 0.8% in sesquiterpene acids calculated as valerenic acids.
Therapeutic properties
Valerian promotes sleep and relaxation.
Mechanism of action
Valerian explains its effects through modulation of the gabaergic system by increasing the binding of GABA and decreasing its degradation. Action as a partial rector agonist to serotonin 5-HT5a was also evidenced.
Tolerability
Valerian is well tolerated. Side effects associated with the use of valerian are mild and infrequent and in any case similar to those reported with placebo in randomized clinical trials.
